It has been celebrated around the world for more than a century, March 8 maintains its essence as a day to ensure the rights, equity and non-discrimination against women.
We invite you to reflect on this day, and to thank those who inspire and motivate you, and let them know how much they influence you!
Women’s Day through time
Maybe you didn’t know, but every year there is a theme, driven by the UN and the organization of the International Womens Day. This 2023, the invitation is to embrace equity, through the hashtag #EmbraceEquity.
But what is the origin of this day?
In 1910, in Denmark, a German woman named Clara Zetkin proposed to establish an international day to fight for women’s labor rights, every year and in every nation.
Following her proposal, on March 19, 1911, Working Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in four countries in Europe. Millions of people united for the rights of women to work, to vote, to receive professional training, to hold public office, and to be free from discrimination.
A few days after that event, on March 25, the famous Triangle Shirtwaist Co. tragedy occurred in New York, United States. A historic event in the struggle for labor rights.
But, have you ever wondered why this day is represented with purple?
In recent years, movements related to women’s rights wear the color violet or purple to identify themselves. Actually, there are two theories as to why this representation.
The first one has a touch of legend, and is related to the tragedy we mentioned before: the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. textile factory.
Many say that the smoke coming from the building was of a purple color, due to the dyes of the clothes they manufactured.
On the other hand, and also at the beginning of the 20th century, the suffragette women’s movements adopted three colors to identify themselves. In the case of the British: purple, white and green. In the United States, gold instead of the latter.
It is assumed that the current use of the color purple to identify March 8 has to do with this second theory. It is a legacy of those social battles.
Over time, around the world, this date began to be used to show women how much we appreciate them and how important they are, a very special day to honor them.
